Mazda unwraps the new MX-5 Concept

Mazda has unveiled what is deemed as a low emission, stripped out, driver focused version of the world’s biggest selling sports car, MX-5. After widely debating on the sports car strategy on issues of current MX-5 being too heavy, MX-5 is considered as an ideal candidate for the nature inspired Nagare design language, to make it suit the sports car’s ethos. The Nagare design language, however, won’t feature on any of Mazda concepts in future, but will be used on the upcoming production cars as well as MX-5.

Launched first time in 1989, the original MX-5 had a target weight of 1000kg during development and Mazda aims to keep it the same in the new model. The car is due in 2012, but the engine options remains to be chosen yet and firm is still contemplating to chose from its Sky-G range of petrol motors; 1.6 and 1.8-liter variants. The chosen variant will be mated to six-speed manual gearbox as standard.
